Working in a green office is good for people, their pride and productivity, a new podcast reveals - but the tea and coffee need to be up to scratch.
In the latest podcast from office designers Morgan Lovell, Tim Oldman, managing director of the Leesman Index - which offers a unique survey tool to measure workplace effectiveness - gives a fascinating insight into the business benefits of a sustainable office.
The Leesman Index surveys employee feedback on how their workplace environment offers support to them in their important activities. In the episode, Tim explains that early investigations on the subject of sustainability reveal working in a green office makes people more diligent - and that means businesses reap the benefits of a motivated workforce.
Tim said: “We are certainly seeing early indicators that where an organisation’s response is more positive to the environmental sustainability of their office, their pride in the workplace is also higher ranking.
“So it may be organisations that are investing and communicating with their staff about sustainability are actually generating a higher level of corporate pride.”
While green workplaces are being well-received by the UK’s workforce, the podcast also reveals that more than 50 per cent of people surveyed feel they work in an office that does not offer adequate support - with insufficient space for breaks and poor refreshments getting the thumbs down.
Tim added “The areas in which we see consistent under-delivery are things like confidential discussion - workplaces are not supporting that important activity well enough. We might also see under-delivery on spaces for relaxing and taking a break.
“There may be some employers who think relaxing is not a workplace activity, but maybe in these constrained times when people are working harder and longer, staff expectation to relax and take a break in the workplace is increasing.
“Also a surprising statistic shows that the most important facility in an organisation’s corporate environment is the coffee and refreshments facilities.”
This podcast is the latest in the Green Office series, produced by Morgan Lovell, where listeners can hear about the latest trends, technology and people in the world of green office design.
