Morgan Lovell wins gold for ‘green’ office design and fit out

Office design and fit out company Morgan Lovell breaks ground in office sustainability with their design and build of energy company RWE npower’s new London office. The project achieved the highest Gold Ska rating in the United Kingdom.
The Ska rating method is a new assessment tool for sustainable office fit out in the UK. It focuses purely on the fit out market and is applied right from the design stage through to the construction of a project. The scheme recognises best practice across energy and CO2, waste, water, pollution, transport, materials and wellbeing.
RWE npower’s new office located in the City of London pioneered an exceptional Ska standard in office design and fit out, with nearly 100 per cent of materials installed as part of fit out being either reused, recycled or diverted from landfill. Some of the initiatives include: using only FSC and PEFC certified timber, the use of energy efficient LED lamps and installing kitchen worktops that contain 84% renewable raw material and are degradable at the end of their life.
Morgan Lovell’s in house sustainability manager and accredited Ska assessor, Sophie Hutchinson talks of the importance of achieving a Gold Ska rating on this project.
“We understood that as an energy company, RWE npower’s highest priority was sustainability, and this was something we made sure we delivered from the early design stages through to the construction of the project.”
Dave Horton, property, sustainability & capital investment manager at RWE npower, noted that this was not his first Gold Ska rating. However, he was particularly impressed by the high rating this project received and said: “I have a target of Ska Gold for each major project we start. Out of the four Golds that have been awarded so far RWE npower have achieved three showing our commitment to sustainability. This project is the highest scoring Ska ever and I’m really proud of the whole team!”
It wasn’t just Dave who was impressed with the new office, he continues, “The staff all think it is fantastic. They feel the space is more welcoming, and they love the personality the new office space projects.”
