Tackling the 'Green' Office at Breakfast

Monday 15th October 2007

BIFM members looked at how they could balance a moral obligation to create a more sustainable office interior, with the constraints of a company budget.

In association with the BIFM Midlands region, office transformation specialist Morgan Lovell organised a breakfast briefing to explore the key factors in creating a more ‘green’ office interior to at the Birmingham Radisson SAS hotel.

Interest in the subject saw the briefing attract a full house, with almost 100 property professionals present.

Delegates were told how the creation of a sustainable office can help with staff comfort and morale, whilst saving money by cutting energy bills.

Practical ideas that can make a difference, such as using software to shut down idle computers and installing energy saving lighting, were covered.

Methods to make the most of natural light and ventilation as well as how to specify products made with a high recycled content, were also explored.

Tony Knight, chairman of the BIFM Midlands region, said: “It was a really informative meeting that gave many practical ideas about sustainability that can be implemented today.”

Afterwards delegates were given a guided tour of Morgan Lovell’s new office – based at Fort Dunlop – which offers a range of sustainable features, including recycled materials, sustainable timber and energy-efficient lighting.

Julian Lebray, managing director of Morgan Lovell in the Midlands, based at Fort Dunlop, said: “Sustainability in the workplace is an issue that needs to be balanced with the demands of a competitive commercial world. Today’s seminar discussed achievable solutions that don’t cost the earth.”
