A £150 million office construction project has been granted planning approval in Gateshead.

The Trinity Square Project could create up to an additional 750 jobs in the town, with the 3.6-hectare site situated at the former Trinity Square Shopping Centre that was demolished earlier this year.

Gateshead council leader Mick Henry said: "We are delighted to have taken such a giant step forwards with planning permission after careful but complicated negotiations during such a time of considerable economic change."

He added that the city centre has been in need of regeneration for many years and this project will provide real opportunities for local businesses and residents in the future.

Meanwhile, planners recently gave their full consent for construction work to begin at the £4.5 billion Wirral Waters scheme in the north-west.

Local council leader councillor Jeff Green made the announcement following his return from a trip to China where he had been canvassing for support for the project for business leaders.
