Bad office design causing sickness
18-04-2008
Bad office design is being held responsible for two Sheffield Home Office employees' feelings of nausea, according to reports. The Vulcan House building was opened last year and was a flagship development for the city but the way the office has been designed has resulted in slight floor movements that have caused illness among some of the resident staff.
Expansion gaps were incorporated into the office design of the building and this allows for movement of up to five millimetres, which is enough to make some people start to feel queasy, the South Yorkshire Star reports.
A statement from the Home Office said: "The floor installed in Vulcan House is raised to allow flood wiring of data and telephony cables across the building and is approximately 200mm above the concrete floor and meets all relevant safety and structural integrity tests."
The construction of Vulcan House meant that around 1,000 government workers were able to come under the same roof following a series of local office relocations.
