Birmingham's Big City Plan
28-02-2008
Birmingham council has announced a major new development project that aims to transform the heart of the city over the next twenty years.Over the coming 15 months, the council will be involved in a consultation with development planner Urban Initiatives to establish a structured approach to regeneration that will shape the economic, social and cultural outlook of Birmingham for years to come.
There is a labour force of approximately 1.5 million people in the immediate urban area in Birmingham, with 100,000 people in Birmingham are employed in financial and business services.
Proposals are based on a broad set of themes that are likely to include office designs, residential developments and improvements to public spaces in the heart of the city.
Birmingham's economy has been growing at a stable rate of around three per cent for five quarters up to June 2007, with a report published last year by Birmingham Economy suggesting that manufacturing conditions for local business had been the best since 1994.
