Blears outlines sustainability plans

27-03-2008

In a recent speech regarding architectural planning, office design and public space, secretary of state for communities and local government Hazel Blears has said that public spaces need to reflect the ideas and values of society.

Regarding the planning of commercial and retail developments, Ms Blears asserted that in response to 21st century challenges, sustainability and high-quality design needed to be top of the agenda if projects were to be successful in interacting positively with their environments.

"We all understand the scale of the challenge with climate change, its potentially devastating impacts and that the long-term cost of inaction far outweighs the short-term cost of taking positive steps now," she commented in her recent speech to delegates at the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment event.

She added that in pursuit of carbon emissions reductions, sustainability should become an integral part of the way that towns and cities are built.

Ms Blears took up the position as communities secretary in June 2007.
