Capital to see new half-doughnut office layouts
21-04-2008
A nine-story office block in the shape of a half doughnut is to be built in the city of London, near the Old Bailey.Designed by architect Ken Shuttleworth the main designer of the Gherkin at St Mary Axe the new building features a unique office layout and is covered with black and white tiles, in the style of a chess board.
The contemporary office design has the support of London Mayor Ken Livingston and is backed by English Heritage, but the Commission for Architecture and the Built Enviromnent is worried that the building may not 'fit' in its tight surroundings, according to website This Is London.
City planners will meet with councillors this week to discuss the building and whether or not to approve its construction.
Recently, the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA), an organisation based in America, suggested a list of ways in which companies can improve their office interiors to reduce carbon emissions.
Mr Livingston estimates that nearly a third of London's carbon footprint can be attributed to office emissions and work to increase sustainability in office design could help to drive this proportion downwards.
