Careers undermined by minimum wage

28-03-2008

Careers undermined by minimum wage For those wishing to excel in the working environment, it has been suggested that the new increases in the minimum wage could undermine incentives.

According to the British Retail Consortium (BRC), as minimum wages catch up with other pay levels, workers could lack the motivation to improve their skill sets and progress within a company.

Richard Dodd, head of media for the BRC, said: "It will erode differentials as people on the bottom level catch up with people who are more skilled and experienced who are on pay rates above the minimum wage."

He also added that this could have a knock-on effect for business costs.

Between October 2002 and October 2006 the adult minimum wage has increased 27.4 per cent, in comparison to a 17 per cent rise in average earnings.

From October of this year, the minimum wage will increase to £5.73 for those over the age of 22.ADNFCR-8000187-ID-18527603-ADNFCR
