Co-op gives government sustainability wish-list Co-operative Insurance has submitted a sustainability wish-list to the government.

After entering an agreement with green energy supplier Ecotricity to help the company move towards carbon neutral energy, the firm has given a set of recommendations to secretary of state for trade and industry Alistair Darling.

Companies including Alliance Boots, Sainsbury's, Scottish and Southern Energy and Reckitt Benckiser have joined Co-operative Insurance in asking Mr Darling to introduce measures to help firms implement sustainability.

David Anderson, chief executive at Co-operative Financial Services, said: "Climate change is making UK businesses look at their environmental impact and explore ways to lower their carbon emissions."

Among the measures encouraged by the companies are improvements to council planning guidance, the creation of a long-term energy strategy and infrastructure to encourage investment in sustainability.

Meanwhile, the president of Miami's science museum recently told a newspaper that incorporating sustainability is not necessarily more expensive.

Gillian Thomas told Miami Today that reduced energy costs offset any initial expenses within a decade.
