Corporate agendas are likely to make sustainable office design one of their top priorities in the coming years, it has been claimed.
Paul Edwards, head of sustainability at Hammerson, told attendees of the Sustainability Now event that tenants will be moving away from properties which do not provide green value over the coming years.
He commented: "In the future, if you are a major tenant in any city ... in the UK [that is] moving into a building, they will be asking the question around sustainability."
Mr Edwards noted, however, that values are not necessarily reflecting this shift towards a green agenda for businesses.
According to the latest UK Sustainable Property Index from Investment Property Databank, buildings across the UK have been examined for sustainability over the last 11 quarters and they registered a return of -10.8 per cent.
This compared with a reduction of -14.8 per cent for properties that were less sustainable.
