Corporate worth of office design 'increasingly acknowledged'

A growing number of companies are enlisting the help of office design specialists, a new report claims.

According to CanWest news service, more employers are using interior designers to attract and retain employees and heighten productivity.

Lance Carlson, president of the Alberta College of Art and Design, told the news provider: "It's the total crossover between business and design."

He added: "If you have a management problem, you have a design problem. How to retain employees is a design problem."

According to the report, educational facilities are beginning to acknowledge the trend, with Stanford University and the Illinois Institute of Design creating separate facilities focusing on the relationship between business and interior layout.

Princeton, Yale, Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are also reportedly implementing initiatives focused on the corporate implications of office design.

Mr Carlson went on to say that interior designers are beginning to recognise "that they have a bigger calling".

In related news, Craig Zurawski, executive administrator of the Alliance for Sustainable Built Environments, recently told GreenerBuildings that sustainable office design is "at the core of profitable business strategies".
