The European Commission (EC) has given its seal of approval to plans for the development of up to four million sq ft of office space in London.

A joint venture project has been set up by Lend Lease and London & Continental Railways that will cost £1.3 billion and is to be situated at Stratford City. The EC's approval brings the plans one stage further, with the developers hoping to create up to 15,000 new jobs once the project is complete.

Dan Labbad, chief executive officer for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at Lend Lease, said: "This milestone sets the pathway for establishing London’s most significant new business district since Canary Wharf."

He added that the new project will offer unrivalled connectivity between major business hubs in the capital, including Canary Wharf, the City and central London.

Elsewhere in the capital, financial services provider Friends Provident recently unveiled plans for the creation of a new UK headquarters in the City.

The firm is hoping to take on 48,000 sq ft of office space at One New Change and will be relocating 200 members of staff to the premises in the near future.
