The Empire State Building is to undergo a $500 million (£339.9 million) sustainable makeover to reduce its energy usage by up to 40 per cent.
Work is now underway on improving a range of aspects of energy efficiency at the building, which once completed will bring about cost savings of approximately $4.4 million annually.
"This innovative process, which has developed new techniques for modelling and organising an integrated programme, offers a clear path to adoption around the world, leading to significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions," said Anthony Malkin, owner of the building.
Refit work has been scheduled to be completed by 2013.
Meanwhile, sustainable office design company Morgan Lovell recently held a seminar outlining how businesses can make the most of their green office interior space.
The company has put on this meeting in a bid to educate businesses about how they can improve their BREEAM rating and apply energy-efficient measures to reduce outgoings.
