Employers need to act on RSI
19-03-2008
Employers need to encourage workers to take short breaks during the day to help combat the risk of repetitive strain injury (RSI), it has been suggested.According to Physio at Work, employees should take regular short breaks and get up and move around the office, adding that companies need to actively encourage such behaviour.
Bronwyn Clifford, a chartered occupational therapist and director of Physio at Work, said: "[Workers] should change their tasks so they are not just typing all day - alternate between writing, reading, going to do some photocopying or filing and going to meetings."
Advisory group RSI Awareness states that musculoskeletal disorders of the upper and lower limbs are a common occurrence in the office environment, with an estimated £20 billion lost annually due to lost productivity as a result of injury.
Ms Clifford added that any position, awkward posture or repetitive movement can result in an increased risk of RSI.
