Employers 'should be mindful' of age
27-03-2008
Employers within smaller organisations have been advised to be wary of age discrimination in the workplace, as employees have become increasingly aware of their rights.According to a recent statement by diversity officer for the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development Freda Line, workers are often more informed than employers regarding age discrimination issues.
For smaller businesses, the close-knit working environment can encourage awareness, but Ms Line adds that in some cases "organisations can be careless because they don't have the HR support or personnel expertise and they can fall foul of the law".
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) reports that there has been a steady increase in the number of older workers in employment in this country, with the large rise in the number of female employees between 50 and pensionable age in work since the 1980s said to be attributable to positive changes in social and occupational practices.
The number of men in the same age bracket in employment has also improved since the 1990s after a long period of decline, the ONS notes.
