Excellent BREEAM rating for former brick works

Building materials supplier Hanson UK has achieved an Excellent rating for a former brick works in Bedfordshire.
Green Build News reported the development's BREEAM rating is the highest that can be achieved and the 63,500 sq ft development in Stewartby benefits from a range of sustainable features, including increased insulation, thermal mass and rainwater harvesting, as well as utilising natural ventilation and being designed to be carbon neutral.
Duncan Edwards, Hanson project manager, said: "We wanted to create a simple, practical and sustainable building appropriate to its settings, reflecting the historical importance of the site."
He added the design of the premises uses a number of innovative new techniques, including using the cladding on the outside of the building as a load-bearing structure.
The company is one of the UK's leading suppliers of cement, aggregates and heavy building materials.
Hanson is headquartered in both Bristol and Maidenhead and is part of the HeidelbergCement group. Overall, the firm currently employs in excess of 57,000 people across five continents.
