Gherkin and ham, anyone?
11-08-2008
A building dubbed the "can of ham" is due to be built beside the Gherkin structure in London, it has been reported.Given the moniker due to its distinctive shape, the 295 ft tower is due to be made out of steel and glass with vertical fins running up the curved faces to shelter it from excessive sunlight in order to minimise the amount of air cooling required inside.
Plans for the structure have still to be considered by the City of London, the Daily Mail reports.
They include 18 storeys of office layout, plus retail space at ground level.
It is expected that a decision will be made in the autumn and, if approved, construction is likely to take between two and three years to begin, with a period similar in length likely to pass before completion.
Julian Wells of developer Targetfollow tells the publication: "The design is spectacular and we think it will add a huge amount to the City skyscape."
Elsewhere in the capital, it was recently reported in Builder & Engineer that a new office design is set to be built on the south bank of the Thames.
