The latest set of government emissions targets are achievable and could prompt many businesses to embrace sustainable office design and other green measures in the future, it has been argued.
John Barwise, chair of the Cumbria Green Business Forum, said the new targets are ambitious but not beyond what can be achieved if all sectors of the UK pull together to bring about a reduction in carbon over the coming years.
He commented: "The new emissions reduction targets are ambitious but achievable, provided the government is united in supporting those businesses that can deliver them."
According to Phil Thornhill, a spokesperson for the Campaign against Climate Change, plans to reduce carbon emissions by 50 per cent against 1990 levels between 2023 and 2027, with a view to cutting levels by 80 per cent by 2050, are a step forward for the government.
He said that the commitment to reducing overall carbon emissions in the UK is commendable.
