The British Property Federation (BPF) has urged the government to step up efforts to promote sustainable office design or face missing its own green targets in the future.
Liz Peace, chief executive of the BPF, said: "The government should explore how the tax system might be used to actively incentivise improvements."
She argued that measures such as this would help make businesses more inclined to invest in modern office design and to help in the drive for a low-carbon economy.
Peter Clarke, executive officer at British Land, added that by sharing data on carbon output between firms, commercial property landlords and investors, significant savings on energy usage and carbon output can be made.
Lucy Pedler, director of the Green Register, also recently noted that an increase in green building practices in the UK would be of assistance to stabilise future development of commercial property and would help the government meet its carbon reduction targets.
