Health 'can be affected by office design'

Health 'can be affected by office design' Office design can affect health in the workplace, a new study suggests.

According to a poll from Durable UK, the arrangement of workstations could have an impact on employee wellbeing, reports Online Recruitment magazine.

Some 80 per cent of respondents stated that they share workstations with a colleague - a situation which the company claims could facilitate the spread of bacteria.

More than two-thirds of employers reported that their workplace exposes them to health hazards, with 71 per cent of office workers claiming that the environment makes them ill.

Stewart Anderson, vice-president of marketing at Durable UK, told the publication: "People should never under-estimate the impact that microscopic germs can have on any workplace.

"Our research shows that there is a real cause for concern about desktop hygiene and its damaging consequences."

Meanwhile, a recent report from the National Heart Forum in collaboration with the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment and public-space charity Living Streets suggested that office design can be tailored to ensure worker wellbeing.
