Plans to build a 17-storey hotel in Edinburgh have been scrapped and instead a new office building is to be built in its place.
A luxury, five-star hotel had been earmarked for the city's Haymarket railway station. However, widespread condemnation of the proposals have led to its developer deciding to put in plans for 450,000 sq ft of new, modern office design space instead.
Irish firm Tiger Developments made the decision after planners complained that the hotel proposal would overly dominate the area and ruin the city's skyline. Problems also arose in funding the project, due to the impact of the economic downturn.
"In the end, it was a combination of both factors which led us to this decision, but it is history now," Tiger development director Simon Fox commented.
Other projects which Tiger is currently involved with include Drummond Street in NW1 London, the creation of 28,000 sq ft of office space in NW2, Citygate in Sheffield and offices at Granville place, also in London.
