There is a glut of unused office space in Huddersfield that is ripe for redevelopment, it has been claimed.
According to research by Huddersfield estate agents Bramleys, there is more than 300,000 sq ft of office currently lying empty in the town. More than half of this figure located in St George's Warehouse at Huddersfield Railway Station.
Graeme Haigh, a partner at Bramleys, said: "A lot of the building stock in Huddersfield town centre is old. Changes in working patterns mean people don't want lots of little rooms - they want open-plan and often these older buildings don't provide that."
Elsewhere in the region, a campaign has been launched in Leeds for the provision of community office space for local businesses.
A group of activists is now in the process of raising funds to purchase premises in the city. The group has raised £1,000 and is hoping to reach their target of £10,000 - enabling them to apply for a mortgage.
