Levity effect 'is important in the workplace'

The so-called levity effect is an important part of creating a successful and happy modern workspace, it has been claimed.

According to the authors of a new book on the subject of business success and office design plans, creating an atmosphere that encourages staff to have a laugh can be a winning formula.

Written by Adrian Gostick and Scott Christopher, The Levity Effect makes the case for having humour in the modern office space and one of the top tips from the pair is to watch the spoof comedy show The Office during lunch breaks.

A recent study by Ipsos also appeared to support the idea after it discovered that employees would be more likely to remain with a particular company if they thought their boss was an amusing character, the Economist reports.

There are a number of organisations in the US dedicated to offering advice on how to blend hard and serious work with an office design that allows staff to enjoy each others company and share jokes when appropriate - with one example, humourintheworkplace.com, asserting "It's about taking what you do very seriously while not taking yourself very seriously".
