Companies keen on improving their sustainable office design credentials have been advised that measuring the amount of energy they use and the waste they produce is key to success in this area.
Paul Edwards, chair of the British Council for Offices' Environmental Sustainability Group and head of sustainability at Hammerson, said occupiers and landlords alike need to ask themselves a few simple questions, such as how much energy am I using? And what can I do to ensure this usage is reduced in the future?
He commented: "If you are the occupier, it's things like measuring those elements and if you're the owner it's measuring the whole building and looking at its load profiles."
According to the UK Green Building Council and the British Property Federation, senior industry figures have sent an open letter to the prime minister and other senior ministers calling for the Energy Bill to be used to legislate on Display Energy Certificates, which provide an A-G energy efficiency rating for buildings.
