New Breeam rating introduced
11-08-2008
A new Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (Breeam) rating has been introduced. The "outstanding" ranking will require developers to satisfy 85 per cent of the testing criteria, web resource Crain's Manchester Business notes.
Sector commentator Alex Solk tells the publication that three years ago, developers were not aiming to satisfy Breeam standards as they were thought of as too much of a fiscal risk from a letting perspective.
However, he notes that there has been a "significant shift" over the last few years.
"No developer in Manchester would consider creating a building that does not meet Breeam's "very good' standard," Mr Solk adds.
He suggests that the new rating will provide people with a new standard to aim for in the future, requiring a "complete rethink" in terms of design and also how buildings are used.
The Breeam standards currently in use are pass, good, very good and excellent.
