The Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA) has provided a £10.7 million grant for the redevelopment of the Chapel Street area in Salford.
It is hoped that regeneration of the region will eventually result in up to £6450 million of international investment in Salford, with new modern office design space, retail outlets, housing and leisure facilities all being earmarked for creation under the scheme.
Paul Lakin, director of land and property at the NWDA, said: "The proposals for Chapel Street will create a vibrant new city centre in Salford and I am pleased that this funding means we can begin to turn these plans into reality."
In total, it is hoped the project will create up to 11,000 new jobs, as well 2.2 million sq ft of new office and retail space.
Plans for the development were put forward by the Central Salford Urban Regeneration Company in partnership with the English Cities Fund and were approved by Salford City Council in January.
