The construction of BT's Local Government UK Operations Centre in South Shields, Tyne and Wear has gotten underway.
It is being carried out by the South Tyneside Council and Miller Construction and is costing approximately £10.5 million.
When finished, the premises will offer 58,000 sq ft of grade A office interior space and BT has signed a long-term agreement to move into 43,000 sq ft of this space - hopefully by the second quarter of next year.
Ewen Murray, co-owner of local shop Coffee Caban in South Shields, said: "I'm very positive about the new business centre as it will bring a through flow of people into town
This increase in footfall will be a real boost for local businesses like ours."
BT - formerly known as British Telecom - is a global company that operates in more than 170 countries around the world. Its customers include over 40 per cent of the Fortune 500 companies in the US and over 65 per cent of British households use its broadband services.
