UK office construction volumes are set to reach their pre-recession levels by 2016-17 if the recovery continues at its present pace, it has been revealed.

Brian Berry, director of external affairs at the Federation of Master Builders, said there has been a severe downturn in construction activity in recent years and the present tricky financial climate in the UK is not doing much to alter this fact.

He commented: "What we are likely to see is a very slow gradual upturn and some people are actually saying it could be until 2016 or 2017 before we get back to the levels we saw before the start of the recession."

According to the latest forecasts from the Construction Products Association, construction output will fall by 0.8 per cent in 2011 and by a further two per cent in 2012 as recovery in private sector construction fails to match the sharp downturn in public sector spending.
