Office design 'should be gender sensitive'
02-08-2007
Office design is often tailored to the average male, the general secretary of the Wales Trades Union Congress (TUC) has asserted.Felicity Williams told the Western Mail that risk prevention efforts could be heightened by addressing the gendered nature of workplace organisation and equipment design.
The Wales TUC is reportedly calling for the gender-neutral perspective of occupational health law to be replaced with an approach that recognises the differing implications of factors such as office design for male and female workers.
According to the expert, work-related stress, infectious disease and upper-limb disorders are more likely to experienced by female employees, while accidents, back pain and loss of hearing tend to be predominately male disorders.
Ms Williams claimed that workplaces in Wales could do more to meet the needs of female workers.
Meanwhile, a recent poll from Durable UK suggested that the way in which workstations are arranged as part of an office design plan can affect employee health, reported Online Recruitment magazine.
