Office refurbishment 'to characterise City'

While the City of London has seen a number of iconic new buildings, such as the Gherkin, spring up in recent years, the next decade could see growth in the office refurbishment sector, it has been claimed.
In an interview with the Financial Times, planning chief in the City of London Peter Rees argued that rather than continue with new developments, there could be a shift to updating older properties in the financial district.
The next ten years could be "a decade of refurbishment and retrofit", he said.
Such a move is necessary, he added, in order to consolidate older stock with more recent developments.
Undertaking office refurbishment projects in the City could allow businesses to make better use of what space is already available and provide more modern working environments, even if the outer part of a building appears old.
While there may be growth in refurbishment projects, a number of new buildings providing office space in the capital are still being constructed.
