Anyone planning to add insulation to a property to make more energy-efficient should be aware of the impact this can have on the working environment, it has been claimed.
Speaking at the Sustainability Now event, Glen Irwin, sustainability director at Gifford, said condensation can be a particular problem in older buildings when additional insulation is fitted.
In turn, this can lead to mould and fungal growth that can be harmful to the health of those in the property.
He commented: "You have got to think about what you are setting in place - try and pre-empt that you are going to have an air-quality humidity issue and then put other interventions in to deal with that."
Sustainability Now took place in London on December 8th and 9th 2010 and was an industry event aimed at promoting a greater awareness of environmental issues across the UK.
Speakers included the Association for the Conservation of Energy, the UK Green Building Council, CB Richard Ellis and GVA Grimley.
