The North Staffs YMCA has been awarded a BREEAM rating of Outstanding.
It offers amenities for young people in the area and also contains office space for use by local businesses, according to 24 Dash.
A £7 million, two-year refurbishment project has been underway at the development for some time now, with a completion date set for some point in 2011.
Danny Flynn, chief executive of the North Staffs YMCA, said: "We are creating a development fit for the 21st Century and it is important to focus on the environment as much as possible."
Elsewhere, Heron Tower in the City of London is to be awarded a BREEAM rating of Excellent when it is completed in the coming months.
The structure will incorporate photovoltaic cells to produce renewable energy, while the building's triple skin will help to reduce heat loss by up to 45 per cent.
It is being constructed by Skanska and was designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox.
