A new report by APG, PGGM and the Universities Superannuation Scheme has shown that more needs to be done to calculate the impact businesses are having on the environment.
The survey revealed just 19 per cent of property companies could give accurate numbers on energy consumption, while 16 per cent were able to provide evidence on water use and just 14 per cent could provide carbon emission statistics.
Roger Gray, chief information officer at the Universities Superannuation Scheme, said: "As long-term investors, the environmental performance of our assets is a major consideration, even in the aftermath of the financial crisis.
"Management of environmental issues is an essential component of good management."
Elsewhere, Leanne Tobias recently wrote in a blog for Greener Buildings that improved eco-efficiency can be achieved without the need for large-scale overhauls of premises.
In fact, small changes like replacing lights with more energy efficient designs could help businesses make significant carbon and cash savings.
