Ringing in a change in office cubicle culture
24-09-2007
An office employee tired of unannounced cubicle callers has invented a device to allow colleagues visiting his workspace to make their presence known without startling their co-workers.Mike Mussoline's Cubicaller is, in principal, a doorbell for your cubicle, which Mr Mussoline designed following a decade of being harassed by impromptu cubicle callers, reports the Baltimore Sun.
Mr Mussoline stated that the office layout meant that his back constantly faced the entrance to his cubicle, meaning that he was unaware of visitors who required his attention.
"One guy I used to work with would say 'ding-dong.' Another guy was really good at shuffling his feet until you noticed him," he told the publication.
He added that his biggest peeve was having cubicle callers stand behind him until he became aware their presence.
The publication states that the item has the potential to "change the culture of cubicle visiting altogether".
It was recently reported in the News Guardian that the Body Shop's new headquarters makes use of waist-high panels in its office cubicles.
