Savvy office design 'prevents burnout'
13-07-2007
Office design can be a way of preventing staff "burnout", a new report claims.According to Long Island Business News, open plan spaces can foster communication and encourage collaborative networking.
The report points out that, while cubicles were originally designed to enhance interaction between workers and supplement the flow of information around an office, the shift to electronic communications "rendered much of that choreography useless".
Added to which, flexible working practices have enhanced the emphasis on staff productivity, it states.
Now, office design tends to incorporate common open areas where workers can refresh and rejuvenate while on a break.
Ted Weiss of T Weiss Realty told the publication: "The work day is not getting shorter. You need to make people enjoy coming to work. It prevents burnout."
The report suggests an "inside out" approach to office design, which involves integrating features of public areas like cafe tables and chairs into the workplace.
Meanwhile, a recent report in Imperial Valley News indicated that office design can reduce stress in the workplace.
