SMBs have 'big part to play' in sustainability

Small and medium businesses (SMBs) have a large role to fulfil in making UK offices greener, according to Penney Poyzer.

The celebrity environmentalist is involved in a nationwide scheme to encourage businesses to consider sustainability and reduce office waste.

A recent Envirowise survey suggests that there is a high level of awareness among UK firms about the dangers of environmental concerns such as climate change, with 79 per cent of SMBs asserting that energy efficiency is important to their firm.

It is of growing concern to consumers too, with Co-operative Bank report finding that a third of customers want to know about a company's ethical credentials.

Ms Poyzer states that while big businesses have a large responsibility for the waste they produce, there are a great number of SMBs that need to fulfil their role.

She adds that there are a number of economic benefits to sustainability.
"We all know that the cost of paper is going up, water use is going up, and electricity is soaring.

So even if a company isn't that connected with the environment, they can shave a lot of money off the bottom line," Ms Poyzer states.
