Sustainability 'important for business'

27-02-2008

The concept of sustainability is important for businesses looking to present a positive brand image, according the Chartered Institute of Marketing.

Ray Jones, a spokesperson for the business development organisation, advised businesses that nowadays, customers "don't just want a good quality product, they want to know what the company's values are".

He added that a commitment to environmentally sound practices can result in strong business returns.

Mr Jones said that those successful in presenting their company and its products in an ethical way can "create a huge emotional bond with customers".

Many businesses looking to improve the office design of commercial premises to improve company issues are using Building Research Establishment's Environmental Assessment Methods (BREEAM) to create a sustainably viable workplace.

BREEAM is the world's most widely used assessment method and tests buildings at both the design and managerial level to reduce carbon output and improve energy efficiency.

The environmental standards examined by the organisation include health and wellbeing, energy consumption, transport facilities and water usage.
