Sustainability targets 'should be more ambitious'

Office design news from Morgan Lovell

Companies and the government should be setting more ambitious sustainable office design targets if they are serious about making the UK zero-carbon, it has been claimed.

Alex Randall, a spokesman for the Centre for Alternative Technology, said the government is at risk of missing its targets if it does not step up plans for the promotion of renewable energy and improvements in sustainability in the workplace.

He commented: "Our research shows that the UK could be powered entirely by renewables by 2030. So the fact that the government is not even meeting its own less ambitious targets is disappointing."

According to research by PricewaterhouseCoopers, the UK will miss its 2020 renewable energy targets unless a "quantum leap" in offshore wind capacity investment is achieved.

The report added that developers face a peak cumulative funding need of up to £10 billion per annum to achieve the annual roll out rate needed to meet the target.
