Businesses have been advised that they should not get blinkered into believing carbon reduction is the only effort they must make to improve their environmental impact.
Indeed, Peter McManners, visiting executive fellow of Henley Business School at the University of Reading, told attendees of the Sustainabilitylive! event on April 21st that sustainable office design has a much broader agenda than just carbon.
"When you have strategies in place you can then tactically exploit the regulations, but if you're not careful you can end up being attracted down a dead-end because you focus too much on carbon," he commented.
The new CRC [Carbon Reduction Commitment] Energy Saving Scheme legislation came into force on April 1st 2010.
It requires all companies to post records of their carbon output each year and will set a limit on the amount they are legally able to produce. If they break these agreed limits then severe sanctions will be laid against them.
