Landlords of commercial property across the UK are increasingly becoming aware of the importance of sustainable office design, it has been claimed.
Ian Fletcher, director of real estate policy at the British Property Federation, said rents for buildings that offer green credentials are beginning to increase and this could have a significant impact on the uptake of sustainable office design in the future for developers and landlords alike.
He commented: "We are just starting to see the environmental performance being reflected in valuations of buildings and, as that becomes more commonplace, then that should be something that landlords are going to find they are going to have to take account of."
According to the European Property Energy & Sustainability report from King Sturge, controlling the cost of using energy is imperative when an economy is recovering from recession.
It claimed a new vision and a new whole-life framework for both measuring the carbon footprint of the built environment and finding a way to encourage investment in sustainable office design and refurbishment is now needed.
