Sustainable office design planned on Isle of Man

Plans for a sustainable office design on the Isle of Man have been unveiled, it has emerged.

The proposed two-storey building will house the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry headquarters at St John's, allowing for the department's six different divisions to be centralised within a single office layout.

Meanwhile the facility will incorporate a wood chip district heating system which is to be powered using the waste of nearby saw mills, with the building to be largely constructed using natural materials.

It is thought that it will be one of the first places on the island to receive a sustainable office fit out.

Phil Gawne, agriculture minister, said: "It is a very exciting time for the department, the plans for our new headquarters have progressed at a pace and we are all looking forward to the next stage and its eventual completion, hopefully in 2010."

An application for planning permission has been submitted to Tynwald - the legislative body on the island - and if granted construction is set to start before the end of the year.

In other news, it was revealed in April that the Welsh Assembly government is planning an office relocation to Llandudno Junction.
