Work on the refurbishment of the UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO) in Taunton, Somerset has been put on hold indefinitely.
The undersecretary of state for defence Kevan Jones has announced that work at the development is to be halted due to economic pressures making the project financially unviable at present.
However, a spokesperson for the organisation said that a backlog of works which had been in abeyance at the site are to be completed to ensure UKHO employees continue to operate in safe surroundings.
"This will ensure that staff continue to work in an environment which meets health and safety, environmental and legislative requirements," the representative claimed.
Meanwhile, office lettings company Bruntwood recently urged businesses to continue to implement green office design as part of their overall environmental drive despite the ongoing financial downturn.
The company stated that by doing so firms can continue to attract bright, young, environmentally-aware individuals to their workforce.
