The government has been praised for its commitment to reducing overall carbon emissions.
Phil Thornhill, a spokesperson for the Campaign against Climate Change, said the latest announcement by climate change secretary Chris Huhne is a step forward in delivering the kind of commitment to a more sustainable future that is needed if the problem of climate change is to be truly tackled.
He commented: "The nature of the problem is such that if we don't influence other people around the world there's no point, in a sense. In order to have an influence you have to be very bold and stick your neck out."
According to a recent announcement from the government in its fourth Carbon Budget, the UK will cut carbon emissions by 50 per cent against 1990 levels between 2023 and 2027, with a view to cutting levels by 80 per cent by 2050.
However, Westminster stated that the government reserves the right to revise its climate targets in line with that of the EU.
