Plans to develop new government offices in Manchester could create up to 5,000 new jobs in the north-west city.
Earmarked for construction in an area close to Piccadilly station, the new 700,000 sq ft office interior complex would house government departments and thousands of civil servants.
If plans go ahead, the government has stated that the office building could be ready for use by 2014.
"The decision by government departments to fund a feasibility study for locating its major new hub in Manchester is great news ... potentially creating thousands of jobs at a critical time," commented Colin Sinclair, chief executive of MIDAS - Manchester's inward investment agency.
Elsewhere in the city, Crain's Manchester Business recently reported that a number of firms have announced plans for office relocations to the area.
Regeneration company GM Procure and voluntary youth sector organisation Rathbone Training have both unveiled plans to move into office interior accommodation at Trafford House, on Chester Road.
