Whitehall targets sustainability
19-03-2008
The government's bureaucratic centres in Whitehall have been urged to improve the sustainability of their various operations by the Sustainable Development Commission (SDC).Whitehall has made very limited improvement in terms of sustainability in recent years and the commission is keen to see government department's lead by example in terms of their energy use and recycling.
With this aim in mind, there is to be a new sustainability centre of excellence established in Whitehall to coordinate and offer guidance on the drive toward greater levels of environmental awareness with the functions of government.
Cabinet secretary Sir Gus O'Donnell said; "We must find new and innovative ways of raising the bar for sustainable working, planning and procurement."
"We believe we are now well-placed to lead real change," he added.
The SDC was first established in 2000 and has been acting as the independent watchdog of governmental sustainability reporting to the prime minister since 2006.
