Building sustainability from
day one
When the British Ecological Society, Biochemical Society and Society for Experimental Biology moved offices, their top priority was getting a BREEAM Excellent rating.
The problem was achieving that in an old 1950’s building. But because our own head office has a BREEAM Excellent rating, they knew they were in safe hands.
“One of the reasons we chose Morgan Lovell was their sustainable credentials. They understood from day one how important sustainability and a BREEAM rating was to us.”
Hazel Norman, Executive Director of the British Ecological Society.
We knew that in such an old building there’d be a lot of waste, and that our BREEAM rating would rely on how we dealt with what we cleared out, as much as the sustainable design and materials we put in.

Planning is never a waste of time
To ensure we achieved as high a BREEAM rating as possible, we created a waste management plan with the client before construction began. This gave us an agreed recycling target of site waste (45% in this case) and ensured that we had everything in place from the very first day of construction.

Waste, managed
We implemented an audited chain of site waste: separating waste on site to maximise recycling before landfill and sending pallets, cable reels and plastic packaging back to suppliers for reuse. This all contributed to us achieving a site waste recycling rate of 90%, doubling our target of 45%, and of course reaching the BREEAM Excellent rating the client wanted.
