EDF, Britain’s biggest generator of zero carbon electricity were relocating to 1000 Aztec West with the idea to fully reimagine the way they worked. Their old office felt closed off, with little mixing across teams, so the new space had to be social, easy to use and make people want to be there.

Movement and choice on every floor

The design centres on choice, connection and movement to create a space that supports growth, brings business units closer together and helps people feel connected. The ground floor sets the tone for the whole building, with a welcoming reception leading onto a café and dining area, gym and shower facilities, a wellbeing room and an outdoor space. The prominent dining space has become a social anchor for the building, bringing all of the building together for lunch and informal meetings.

The first and second floors feature open plan spaces with sit stand desks, booths in different sizes, collaboration areas with built in technology, a boardroom and tea points. By keeping formal meeting rooms to a minimum and working with flexible furniture, we created a campus style feel that supports spontaneous sessions and helps sell the business to the next generation.

Drawing from EDF’s engineering roots, the aesthetics mix exposed concrete and stripped back details with shapes inspired by atomic energy and science. Brighter tones in furniture and shared areas bring life to the industrial shell, softened by warm colours that help people feel comfortable and ready to do their best work.

A standout South West space

The completed fit out gives EDF’s people a space that’s simple to navigate, gives them a choice in how they work and brings them closer to their colleagues. With technology enabled collaboration zones and aesthetics inspired by EDF’s engineering roots, the office not only meets the practical needs of their engineering teams but also delivers a wow factor that helps attract and retain talent.
