Project description

Teck Resources sought out a central London location for their first European corporate office. An iconic building overlooking the calming gardens of St James’s Square and the buzz of Pall Mall provides the perfect focus for our office design.

In close partnership with our client, we drew up a plan to take full advantage of the views and natural light. We wanted the space to work smoothly for a team that connects to different time zones and provide an impressive space for investor meetings.

The bigger picture was also important to recognise. As a ‘nature positive’ company with its roots in mining, our design choices needed to be compatible with the company’s drive towards sustainability.

Bringing out the best views

So with those goals in mind, we set out to design and deliver a versatile and environmentally-friendly space with a contemporary style, underpinned by traditional elements.

Making the most of the views from the full-height windows and their Juliet balconies was vital. We opened sight lines from every corner of the office. This allows natural light to fill individual spaces and the boardroom through glazed partitions.

Collaboration and connection is necessary for the Teck Resources team and its many visitors. So when demand for meeting space exceeds the boardroom’s capacity, the tea point can be easily converted into a stylish and comfortable meeting room, its sinks, taps and storage cupboards can be hidden by folding doors.

The natural beauty of copper

Copper is of great significance to Teck Resources so it was a natural choice to use untreated copper with many of the finishes. Its anti-microbial qualities mean it’s a perfect practical solution for door handles, frames and shelves. Over time, an added bonus will be how the copper’s stunning patina develops - a feature that will improve and be admired for many years.

Beyond this physical link to copper, our client was keen to demonstrate the beauty of the land where this metal originates. We simplified the layering of an aerial image and from our abstract design we created a colourful, bespoke rug. This is now a centrepiece in the office that amplifies the feeling of being in a comfortable home and reflects the raw beauty of the South American landscape.

Staying closer to home, we also paid tribute to the classic architectural lines on wainscoting panels which relate to features in St James’s Square.

'Nature positive' in the first line

Paying close attention to how our design decisions impact the environment is important to all our projects. Therefore, for Teck Resources, achieving SKA Gold was an affirmation that the ethos behind the office supports their commitment to a green agenda.

For Teck’s workplace we selected carpet tiles designed to trap dust, carpets manufactured from recycled fishing nets and wall panels made from recycled woodchips and tree branches.

A simple but effective way of reducing our contribution to landfill is by reducing waste. One of the ways we achieved this was by sharing the same slab of material for a work surface in the boardroom with the tea point.

Our client’s team couldn’t be more delighted with their new office design. Despite the limited floor space, we delivered a light, spacious and comfortable workplace. We feel privileged to have fulfilled Teck Resources’ commitment to the environment in our design.

This office is a true home away from home. One where you’d be thrilled to work.
