Pioneering CL1 Lab space in Surrey

Key features

Project description

The University of Surrey required a lab space that enabled faculty members to continue to push the boundaries of scientific research. We designed and delivered a multi-use CL1 lab that facilitates advanced research projects.

Our solution involved meticulous planning and innovative design features to overcome the challenges presented by the university's existing infrastructure. One of the key hurdles we faced was the lack of a direct route from the lab to the roof through existing risers. To address this, we devised a strategy to isolate services and carefully plan any work on the roof, ensuring minimal disruption to ongoing activities in the occupied building. Our design incorporated wipeable ceilings, safety flooring and ample surface space for conducting experiments. We also installed gas provisions and movable extractor hoods to cater to diverse research needs. Despite the complex nature of the project, we successfully delivered a functional and adaptable laboratory space within the specified constraints.

The result of our collaboration with the University of Surrey was a highly functional and versatile laboratory that exceeded the client's expectations. The new lab not only met the immediate needs of educators and researchers but also provided a platform for future innovation and discovery. The client's response was overwhelmingly positive, with faculty members appreciating the flexibility and efficiency of the space. The addition of multiple fume cupboards and large power supply points catered to medical requirements and enhanced the lab's usability. Overall, our solution transformed the university's teaching and research capabilities, making it better equipped to meet the evolving demands of academic excellence.

The University of Surrey came to us with a clear brief, a laboratory space that serves as a home to the university staff to carry out research to inform their teaching. They needed it to be safe, without needing extra safety measures like special containment.

Now, this wasn't your run-of-the-mill project. We had to get creative. One major hiccup was the lack of a direct route from the lab to the roof through the existing building structure. It was like trying to build a bridge without any support beams! But we're problem-solvers, so we figured it out. We had to be super careful not to disrupt the busy building while we worked out our plan. Our design had to be top-notch, with features like ceilings you could wipe clean, floors that were safe for everyone, and plenty of space for experiments. We didn't stop there - we added all sorts of cool gadgets like gas supplies and extractor hoods that could move around. It was like designing the ultimate science playground!

So, what happened next? Well, let me tell you - the university was over the moon with what we achieved. The lab became the heart of the campus, buzzing with activity from students and professors alike. It was like watching a spark ignite in a dark room - suddenly, there was energy and excitement everywhere. Teachers found the lab easy to use, and students couldn't get enough of the hands-on learning experiences it offered. With features like multiple fume cupboards and big power outlets, the lab was ready for anything. It was more than just a room with equipment; it was a space where ideas took flight and dreams became reality. And that's the power of a well-designed lab - it's not just about the equipment; it's about creating an environment where curiosity thrives and innovation flourishes.
